NYU Local: Being An Upperclassman In Housing

By Zoe Contros Kearl on September 25th, 2012

You’re older than your RA. The freshmen keep taking the elevator to the fourth floor. Your backpack zipper broke and now your books are covered in beer. And your mail is never, ever on time. This is not real life, it’s res-life.

For whatever reason (mistrusting parents, can’t sign a lease, international student, you’re an RA) you are over the age of twenty and still live in an NYU dorm. Your friends have made the move to Alphabet City or Bushwick. But you, you’re conveniently located in the middle of Manhattan. This is awesome. Living on campus makes many facets of life easy: at least one NYU gym is close by, there are buses to and from Washington Square for free and there are always other students around.

But as an upperclassman, you’ve got friends. The dorm is less of a community, more a place to sleep. It’s nice if you’re living with people you know, and bearable if you’re not. You know the rules to security guards and if you lose your keys you don’t have to call the mysterious super of your fifth floor walkup.

But then there’s that part where you might still share a room. This can also be mediated. If you want a single, that’s sometimes available and you can skirt this issue entirely. If you live with a friend, at least it’s hopefully someone you’ve known for a couple years. Even if they’re random, you guys still have something in common: NYU.

Also something to be aware of is the public conception of living in housing as an upperclassman. The “so where do you live” question always comes up and “in a dorm” always elicits interesting responses. My employer thought it was a fantastic choice, friends have told me I’m wasting my money, and others ask how I’m not living in Lafayette just like every other last choice housing candidate.

The answer is explorations floors. Apply to these with your friends in order to live in dorms that normally fill before your registration time. Do it. I live on a sports themed floor called “Batter Up!” and yes, my name is written on a baseball decal on the suite door. Also we’ve heard the Senior House is actually beautiful so if you plan to live on campus senior year, definitely check that out!

Either way, as you start to plan your next move to Harlem or the Bronx or Bushwick, make sure you know what changes are in store for you.

Project Pay Attention: Take the Pledge

Project Pay Attention is a pledge that asks people to be mindful of the actions and words they use.

Safe spaces are shrinking because technology keeps us all connected, all the time. Harassment and bullying, or what sociologist Robert Faris calls “social combat,” oppresses the victim or target, but also negatively affects the perpetrator and the witness. Sexual orientation, gender identity, race, class, nationality, size, ability, and religious beliefs should not be grounds for social combat.

Research shows that 77% of bullying incidents have no one who intervenes. Yet the same research tells us that if you have a friend who intervenes, you are more likely to intervene yourself.
